New Grading Policies for Attendance & Tardiness

Grading for Glee and Chamber: Attendance, punctuality, and keeping pace with assigned material are the crucial components of grading. Students begin the semester with a presumed “A”, with this grade lowered according to falling short in these areas.

Absences
(1) 2 absences from class are excused each semester; beyond 2, your grade is lowered regardless of reason for absence:
• Third absence lowers your grade by 1/3 (from an A to an A-) regardless of reason.
• Fourth absence and beyond lowers your grade by 2/3 (from A- to B, B to C+).
• Example: 3 absences = from A to  A-;  4 absences = from A- to B; 5 absences:  B to C+

(2) Advance notice of absences is required via email to Sharon Kim: sharonyunlee@gmail.com. Emergency notification: CALL/TEXT Sharon: 510-529-5779. When class begins, the entire ensemble must be made aware of who is or isn’t going to be part of that day’s rehearsal.

(3) Following an absence you will be asked to demonstrate your preparedness on voice mail OR on the spot when you return to class.

(4) Because illness and unforeseen deterrences are a part of life, students who want an A should not allow avoidable absences to occur.  When sick, attend and listen except if you have a fever or a doctor’s note stating contagiousness.

(5) Absence from a dress rehearsal is not acceptable, and will result in being cut from the subsequent performance. This will result in a 2/3 lowering of your grade.

(6) Absence from a non-essential performance is only excused if you inform us of the conflict by Tue Feb 19 and it is due to an academic/unavoidable conflict.

Punctuality:
(1) 3 “tardies” to class are excused each semester.  Fourth and subsequent tardies will be tallied as ½ of an absence regardless of reason, with grade affected accordingly.

(2) Arriving late to a CALL TIME for a performance will not be excused, and will not be considered within the 3 allowed. It will result in lowering your grade by 1/3 grade point.

Preparedness:
(1) You must be up-to-date on all assignments/blog postings in order to be prepared for class.

(2) Google voice testing (assignments posted on blog) will  occur regularly for Glee, OR, you can negate the need for these taking these tests by attending sectionals
(3) Quartet testing will occur weekly  in Chamber on Tuesdays
(4) Quartet grading = solid, shakey, or unprepared. Students will not be able to perform a piece until they can demonstrate a “solid” ability to sing their part. Consecutive shakey or unprepared performances in quartets will also jeopardize admittance into the group the following semester.
