Thank you all for coming to class with wonderful comments, input, and questions for our Dept. Chair, Frank Murray. It was very helpful for both Dr. Julie and myself to hear your concerns as well. I'm not sure if all of you saw the list of dates and announcements written on the board. In case you did not, here they are again:

Thur. Dec 1:
GLEE who are enrolled this semester and would like to participate next semester, please come see us for a quick 10 minute re-assessments between 3pm-6:30pm. We will be up in Syufy 220 (unless otherwise notated). It's very rewarding to hear your growth from August until now; your strengths and what needs improvements.

Tue. Dec. 6:
4:30-5:30pm: Student Officer interviews (Art 105) Applications due at interview. Email Sharon to reserve a time slot.
5:30-6:30pm: Chamber Singers REHEARSAL (Art 105). Those interested in singing poppy/jazzy Christmas solos/small ensembles, be ready to sing it! **ALL please attend, even if you do not plan to come on Thursday.
DUE: Last day to turn in written letter that states your $450 lab fee waiver for tour. Explain why you will not attend. NO exceptions on late letters. I must turn them into the Dept. Chair.

Everyone did such a great job! Congratulations on a wonderful performance!
We had a packed house! Don't forget to invite your roommates, friends, professors, etc. We'd like to have a nice crowd to sing for again today.

A few things:

CALL TIME @ 6:30pm - *there will be a little bit of down time to eat and/or change.
CONCERT BEGINS at 8pm, please all meet in the back side of the chapel at 7:45pm to re-group.
SOLOISTS!! - At the end of a song, Dr. Julie will acknowledge the soloists. Please do a half bow/ head nod right away. She can't pick out and find each one of you! :)

TUESDAY's rehearsal 11/29 - is MANDATORY. This is the last time our group will meet all together. We need you to be there from 4:30pm-5pm only.

A few announcements for you:

1. Some of you have been so kind to inform us of the problems on Gaelxpress. I've informed the Vice Provost, Registrar, and the Dean. They have made the changes to the schedule of classes.

Glee Club (PERFA 019-01) is listed as 4:30-5:25pm
Chamber Singers (PERFA 019-06) is listed as 5:30-6:30pm

Please remember to sign up for re-assessments if you are planning to attend the tour AND be in the course. (Posted on the wall next to Syufy 110).

2. CALL TIME on Sunday Nov. 27 is 2pm sharp in your GLEE (or Chamber) costumes. ALL black, formal/ semi-formal. Ladies: No bare arms or legs. Black or red shoes, socks, nylons/tights. Skirts must hit the knee AND you must wear tights underneath. No jeans. No t-shirts. FORMAL attire.

3. Have a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving!

4. Practice, practice, practice! Yes, that means, even practice your choreography (in the mirror!)

5. Tue. Nov. 29: 4:30-5pm MANDATORY class. We need all of you there.

Mandatory Dress rehearsal TODAY

Today's rehearsal is mandatory. Plan to arrive promptly at 4:30-5:30pm (we may go a tad bit longer). It is our run-through for our Sunday performance. Again, "Dress Rehearsal" in musicians' terms means a practice of the performance; you DO NOT need to wear your uniform today.

IF you are sick or feeling ill, plan to come and sit during the rehearsal. We will be working out standing order, practice walking in/out, etc. You need to be there or it may result in you not performing on Sunday, hence affecting your grade.

Lastly, please read and review the post I wrote re. Absences/Tardies and Rehearsal behavior below. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication! See you all on Tuesday.

Please note that absences are taken with a grain of salt. If you have meetings or rehearsals scheduled during our class time, you must take the initiative to email or talk to your professor/director telling them that your scheduled classes are a priority and have precedence over clubs, other rehearsals, etc. It can get confusing as our CLASS is called "Glee Club" but we are in fact, not a club, we are a class with class time = rehearsals.

We've made exceptions for a few people who have followed my specific instructions on excused absences/tardies. This is because their reason has been emailed in advance with a valid description. ALL absences and tardies need to be made up by following up with another student or with our student director, Lucas Shimizu.

If you are missing music or need assistance learning your parts, it is your responsibility to take the initiative and ask one of your student officers. (Paige, Angelica E., Joellen, Jaclyn, Jeffery, or Lucas). You can also ask me via EMAIL to set-up an appointment.

Rehearsal time is very limited; we only have 1 hour together each day! Please know that you are free to chat and catch up with new and old friends! We encourage that! However, once we are in rehearsal 4:30-5:30, 5:35-6:30pm are FOCUSED REHEARSAL TIME. No talking, whispering, texting, etc. If you do not have music, look on with your neighbor. Proper rehearsal etiquette will allow us directors to be as productive as possible. IF you are sick, we encourage you to come and sit in the corner. You can still learn a lot by listening and watching your section without singing. There's a 5 minute break from 5:30-5:35pm for Chamber Singers; please exit the room to discuss any musical notes or use that time to say hello to your friends.

Dear Glee Club/Force,

We did it!!! I'm sure all your friends and folks are so proud of your accomplishments at SMC's first ever Relay for Life! Our online donation page reports $1,985 and we still have at least $235 in cash donations to be added to that! Farrrrr exceeding our goal of $1,500. For your information, we were the ONLY team to succeed in reaching each team member's personal goal of $100, with many of us exceeding it! Sport your shirts until the next Relay for Life on campus ;)

Also, the whole campus is buzzing about our good work and our talent. Thank you Glee Club for all your hard work and offering your beautiful voices to the event. After some consideration, both Dr. Julie and I have made changes to your schedule this week. All of you have been working extra hard to learn and memorize music, and, additionally, thank you for participating in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Many people were touched by your performances. Thank you all for your extra time and extra work.

With that said, we are CANCELING class on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Take the afternoon off to catch up on other classwork or simply take a breather.

Please note that "When You Believe" Solo auditions will be POSTPONED to next Tuesday, Oct. 18th. (Chamber Singers: "Rise Up Shepherd" solo auditions will be postponed to this Friday).

Br. Martin, an organist is putting together a music program, entitled "Music in the Life of William Keith", that will take place on November 9, a Wednesday, at 1 pm in the College Chapel.

Lino Rivera will play a couple of piano pieces, Br. Martin has an organ solo, and there are a few Scottish songs and hymns for which he would welcome more singers.

Hey Glee Force,

Many of you have already singed up and are well on your way to achieving your fundraising goals! As a team, we have raised $1,030 for the fight against cancer! That's already 68% of our goal of $1,500 and we still have 5 whole days to fundraise! Keep it up!

If you haven't already, let me know if you plan on singing with us on Saturday from 11am-1pm by replying to this email. We need enough Glee Club singers to sing "Help," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Seasons of Love," and "One Day." Don't worry if you don't know the pieces from last year, we will have rehearsal time this Tuesday! Hey Glee!

The first ever Saint Mary's Relay for Life is just around the corner... LET'S DO THIS! Many of you showed an interest in the event, and our team is officially registered! Go to Glee Force Team Page and register for our team!

Relay for Life is a 24-hour relay dedicated to the celebration, education, and fundraising for cancer victims, survivors, friends, and family. The event is from 3pm Friday, October 7 to 3pm Saturday, October 8. As a team, we will be responsible for fundraising, walking, a little educating, and entertainment (easy breezyyyy)! It's only the first month of school, and already we've had so much success working together that I KNOW we can do this!

Our goals are...
to raise $100 for each team member's donation!
have at least one Glee Trooper on the track at ALL times!
create a fun educational activity for our campsite!
provide 2 full hours of entertainment! (Glee ensemble, small groups, soloists, and friends!)
not drive each other crazy for the 24hours!!! hahah

Chamber Singers Gig & Bake Sale

As you all know, the Chamber Singers will be singing at Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning.

Glee singers, it is NOT mandatory, but encouraged for you to come and support your fellow singers. This is a fundraising event for all of you. All the funds received will help in lowering costs while we're on tour. LOPC members love to chat and mingle with college students. If you can come, WONDERFUL!!! Wear your Glee t-shirts, (any type of pants/skirt), and wear a big smile on your face. Be ready to shake hands, greet, and thank the church members for their support.

Paige has put on a spectacular BAKE SALE. Some of us have been baking this weekend to provide delicious treats for the people at church to munch on. (MORE money raised= happy singers!)

I highly encourage you to come and thank LOPC in the morning. There will be church coffee! :P

Singers, You all looked fabulous and sounded great at Weds' concert! There's still some tweaking and fine tuning that we can do to work toward competition at tour so we DO rehearse Thursday. BASSES: review your notes on second pg of Monteverdi, "e tremolar..." is wrong! also review your part last section, last bage.

**Rehearsal: we meet in Art 105 - different order in that GLEE meets first hour, 4:30pm- 5:30pm, and then CHAMBER, 5:30-6:30pm.

**Personal Medical Forms are due at rehearsal!

**Call-Time @ 7:15pm SHARP in the Chapel. (in Glee and Chamber Formal Uniform; ladies this includes make-up and RED accessories and RED shoes. Men, you looked uniformed and really nice.)

Singers! I hope you all are relaxed and refreshed from spring break. I also hope you are all ready for our next 2 very FULL weeks! Tour is NEXT WEEK! Please review our google calendar (scroll down) & important dates (to your right). Note: there are specific call times, some earlier starts to rehearsals, and added mandatory meetings. All these are needed as we prepare for tour, musically and logistically.

Do your part: review your music, your text, your choreography, plan ahead for homework assignments in your other classes, remind your professors of your upcoming absences.
Glee Club: See you Tuesday, at 4:30-6:30pm (meet in art room, move to Chapel at 5:30). BRING YOUR PERFORMANCE SHOES. We need the full 2 hours for Glee to work out choreography and music.

Lastly, we are trying to raise as much money as possible to help with costs during our tour. At both evening concerts (Apr 28 & May 10) we will be having a BAKE SALE. Please consider donating your time/$5-10 to bake cookies, cupcakes, brownies, etc. to help raise funds for our group. Please talk to PAIGE if you are interested.

Congratulations! Next Performance: April 6!!

Dear Singers,

You should be so proud of your extra work following Wednesday's performance. The result was an outstanding concert on Thursday. Sharon, Donna, and I were so proud of the additional preparedness that you all clearly undertook. Bravo! This shows us all what hard work and applying yourself can do!

Our next performance will be April 6, for the Convocation ceremony - very high profile. 12:15 call time (have you notified your professors yet about needed to leave class early?), 12:45 performance. Chamber Singers will sing O Nata Lux (a cappella) as a prelude for the event, Angela, Joellen, and Jaclyn will sing the Filipino National Anthem, and Glee Club will sing Seasons of Love in the middle of the ceremony & Siyahamba at the conclusion with audience singing along on the English verses. Dress will be formal.

We have only eight rehearsals until our dress rehearsal for tour. Much work lies ahead - keep this success in your mind as we move forward and call for continued extra efforts. Know that Sharon and I are looking for modest performance opportunities for you to help strengthen your performances skills. We'll keep you posted!

For those of you who have seen our flyers around campus and are interested in joining us, it's not too late! Auditions will be held in the Br. Kyran Room (located in the Art Center) tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday, 2/9) from 12:00 - 2:00 pm and again on Thursday afternoon (2/10) from 3:00 - 4:30 pm. Our party was filled with wonderful suggestions, ideas, and affirmations...much joy, much warmth, and much anticipation. Thanks, also, for the snacks brought and shared!!

Thank you for your efforts and dedicatation this semester - it's going to be hard to wait until February to meet again. I hope you all feel proud of your concerts; they were heartfelt and beautiful, with moments of sheer beauty and much joy. I think, particularly on Monday, we performed some of those pieces the best we've ever done. How great is that? We'll be posting here very soon the results of your voting for officers.

MEN: black satin shirt- tucked in, black satin necktie, tuxedo pants, black socks, black shoes, clean/well-groomed face and hair.
WOMEN: black gown (tailored/hemmed to fit if possible), black short jacket, black nylons, black shoes (character shoes are best. Max. heel height 2"), hair tied back off the shoulders and out of your face, make-up on face, simple jewelry or no jewelry (studs or small dangle earrings, necklace with no charm or charm smaller than a quarter, no bracelets, no watches, simple ring).

**You must come dressed, do not bring your clothes on a hanger!
***Failure to wear the formal concert attire may result in sitting in the audience rather than singing on stage.

On Nov. 4 during rehearsal there will be auditions for the following solos (pop-style, to be performed on mic, and will be featured in the Sun., Nov. 28 & 29 concerts):

Love Comes True
- female solo (sung on mic; keep it light, simple, humble, and understated; history tells us that Mary was 13-15 years old at best, so we are looking for that "character")
- male solo (will be sung on mic; looking for a lyrical, simple, interpretation with ablity to blend with Mary's part)

Fill us with Your Light
- opening section female solo, and male solo on repeat: R & B interpretation (will be sung on mic; needs great "groove" and major "attitude" - preach it as you would a gospel piece!)
- closing section: need four soloists for the parts marked as marked as Julie (alto), Michelle (sop), dave or Paul (baritone or tenor), and Juliet (same alto that sings "Julie")

One True Joy
- male solo: need lyrical, nice tone, great feel (to be sung in mic)
- small 3-part ensemble which occurs through-out the piece "As we travel alone"; may include 2- or 3- on a part (so, the ensemble might be 9 or more people)
- solo trio which occurs only at the end ("you bring up hope, you bring us joy")

Location: Chapel

Dress: Come fully dressed in formal uniform attire at the call time.

Men: Tuxedo pants, Satin Dress Shirt, tie, black socks, black shoes, deodorant, no cologne.

Women: Formal Gown, Formal Jacket, black/nude nylons, black dress shoes (heel must be under 2.5 inches), Jewelry: studs or short dangly only, simple necklace. (must be approved by Sharon). No perfume.

Choir - we set goals to learn a wide variety of rep in a short amount of time; we got three pieces memorized, sang in English, Italian, Spanish, Ngunu, and sang accompanied and a cappella. Much has been accomplished, and yet the best is surely yet to come.

We are very excited for your first performance this semester! Tomorrow we will be performing for up to 800+ people. Please represent SMC well by being friendly, warm, courteous, and dressed "business casual" or "Sunday best". We want to look good.
